What to expect from your first job

Getting ready for your first job? Find out what employers look for, what you need to get started, and what to expect along the way!

• What it pays

  A full-time job pays at least Rs 17,745 per month, the national minimum wage. For certain jobs, higher minimum salaries may apply: Rs 23,000 for diploma holders and Rs 25,000 for degree holders, depending on the job category and applicable regulations.

• The hours

  A full-time workweek is generally up to 45 hours, excluding breaks. In shops, hotels and other sectors, you may work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, depending on the job.

• Probation period

  Your first few weeks or months may be a trial period. During this time, you learn the job, and your employer sees how you get on. Make sure you understand your probation period and the terms of your job before you start.

• Taking leave

  If you complete your first 6 months at work without missing any working days, you can qualify for leave under Mauritian law. From your 7th month, you can earn 1 day of annual leave and 1 day of sick leave per month, up to your 12th month of employment.
