The Design Engineer is responsible for the preparation and validation of working drawings related to road construction projects and civil works.

 

This role involves analyzing project plans and specifications, propose alternative technical solutions, preparing detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with project managers, site supervisors, engineers, and consultants to ensure that all the design aspects of the projects are in control so that projects are completed within budget, with required criteria and on schedule.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Analysing and understanding of Construction plans :
    • Review and interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications.
    • Ability to analyse construction plans from engineers and identify technical issues.
    • Be able to relate project plans with the existing standards and norms related to road infrastructure projects.
    • Be able to interpret and corelate plan views with cross sections and long sections drawings
  2. Project Conception:
    • Understand the conception of roads with dry and wet services and other road furniture.
    • Understand and be able to design junctions as per standards (Simple T junctions, roundabouts and interchanges)
    • Be able to interpret ground surveys and read contour lines and work with the various coordinate systems.
    • Be proactive and improve designs when required to optimize on earthworks, drainage and even dry services
  3. Drafting and Modelling:
    • Be Fluent with AutoCAD drafting software to make coherent plans in 2D.
    • Show competence with 3D software such as Covadis, Civil 3D or Mensura to do 3D modelling of road infrastructure projects.
    • Prepare comprehensible construction plans to required standards and quality including layout plans, long sections, cross sections and typical detailed drawings.
    • Prepare construction phase drawings when necessary
    • Follow up of plans and subsequent revisions
  1. Quantity Analysis:
    • Use of AutoCAD to carry out linear and surface quantities for Road infrastructure projects
    • Use of 3D software to carry out volumetric quantities (Earthworks, Pond capacities…)
    • Use of Microsoft Excel and cross sections to carry out earthwork quantity estimates for tender projects.
  2. Communication and Coordination :
    • Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to clarify project requirements and resolve issues.
    • Communicate with clients when required to understand project goals and constraints and provide advise on various technical solutions.
  3. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of Working drawings issued for specific projects.
    • Follow the various existing ISO guidelines
    • Set up and follow schedule of working drawings

 

Qualifications :

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in, Civil Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: Proven experience as a Design Engineer or in a similar role; typically, 3-5 years.
  • Skills:
    • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
    • Ability to work as part of a Team
    • Proficiency in Road Design Software (Covadis, Civil 3D).
    • Excellent communication abilities and be proactive.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents related to road construction.
    • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations.

Working Conditions :

  • Office-based with occasional site visits.
  • May require extended hours during peak periods.
