MILESTONES MOTOR MUSEUM


Position 1: Museum Tour Guide

Position Overview

The Tour Guide is responsible for providing visitors with an engaging, informative and memorable experience of the Milestones Motor Museum.

Tour Guides will be the principal representatives of the museum during guided tours and must be able to communicate the museum's story, vehicles, personalities, history and displays in an enthusiastic and understandable manner.

The museum intends to employ a team of approximately ten Tour Guides, operating on a rotational basis according to visitor numbers, tour schedules and museum requirements.

Full training on the museum, its collection and its history will be provided. Candidates must, however, demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn, retain and confidently communicate a significant amount of information.


Key Responsibilities

Visitor Tours

  • Conduct guided tours of the Motor Museum.
  • Welcome visitors and introduce them to the museum and its collection.
  • Present information clearly, accurately and enthusiastically.
  • Explain the history and significance of the vehicles, displays and personalities represented within the museum.
  • Adjust the presentation according to the age, knowledge and interests of the visitors.
  • Encourage questions and engage visitors throughout the tour.
  • Ensure tours remain within the allocated time while providing a quality experience.
  • Maintain control of the group and ensure visitors comply with museum rules.

Visitor Experience

  • Create a friendly, welcoming and professional atmosphere.
  • Engage with visitors and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for the museum and its collection.
  • Answer questions confidently where the information is known.
  • Where an answer is not known, seek assistance rather than providing inaccurate information.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of international visitors, families, children, elderly visitors and visitors with disabilities.
  • Represent the museum positively at all times.

Museum Knowledge

  • Undertake comprehensive training on the museum and its collection.
  • Learn the history, specifications, stories and significance of the vehicles and displays.
  • Continually develop knowledge of the collection as new information and exhibitions are introduced.
  • Ensure information presented to visitors is accurate and consistent with museum-approved material.
  • Be prepared to study and retain substantial amounts of factual information.

Candidate Requirements

  • Mauritian Creole and French language skills would be advantageous.

Training

  • Museum policies and visitor procedures.
  • Health, safety and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Appropriate methods of engaging and communicating with different types of visitors.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge and competence before conducting tours independently.


Position 2: Front of House Manager

Position Overview

The Front of House Manager is responsible for the professional and efficient operation of the museum's visitor-facing activities on a daily basis. The role is the first point of contact for guests and is responsible for ensuring that every visitor receives a warm, professional welcome and an organised, informative and enjoyable experience.

The Front of House Manager will oversee the daily front-of-house operation, including ticket confirmation, guest orientation, tour-guide management, visitor flow, housekeeping standards, health and safety, emergency procedures and general presentation of the visitor areas.

The position will operate on a rotational shift system, alternating with a second Front of House Manager to ensure continuous management coverage.


Key Responsibilities

Guest Reception & Visitor Experience

  • Welcome and receive all visitors in a warm, professional and courteous manner.
  • Confirm tickets, bookings and visitor arrangements upon arrival.
  • Manage the reception and admission process efficiently.
  • Provide guests with an introduction to the museum and explain the visitor journey.
  • Ensure visitors understand the museum's facilities, layout, rules and safety requirements.
  • Deal professionally with visitor enquiries, concerns and special requirements.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service throughout the visitor experience.
  • Monitor visitor numbers and movement through the museum to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.

Tour Guide Management

  • Coordinate and manage the daily deployment of the museum's tour guides.
  • Allocate guides to tours and ensure that tours commence on time.
  • Monitor guide attendance, punctuality, presentation and performance.
  • Ensure guides are appropriately briefed on the day's activities and any special visitors or events.
  • Assist with training and ongoing development of tour guides.
  • Ensure guides maintain the required standards of museum knowledge and visitor interaction.

Health, Safety & Emergency Management

  • Take responsibility for front-of-house health and safety procedures.
  • Ensure emergency exits, evacuation routes and visitor areas remain clear and accessible.
  • Be fully familiar with the museum's emergency and evacuation plan.
  • Coordinate the safe evacuation of visitors and staff in the event of an emergency.
  • Report accidents, incidents, hazards or safety concerns immediately to management.
  • Ensure front-of-house staff understand emergency procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate visitor control during emergencies or unusual situations.

Housekeeping & Presentation

  • Oversee the general cleanliness and presentation of front-of-house areas.
  • Ensure reception, entrances, visitor facilities and public areas are maintained to a high standard.
  • Identify and report maintenance, cleaning or presentation issues.
  • Coordinate with housekeeping and maintenance personnel where required.
  • Ensure the museum consistently presents a clean, professional and welcoming environment.

Daily Operations

  • Open and close the front-of-house operation in accordance with museum procedures.
  • Ensure all daily operational checks are completed.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to visitors, incidents, tours and other relevant activities.
  • Communicate operational issues to museum management.
  • Assist with special events, VIP visits, school groups and other organised activities.
  • Work closely with management and other museum departments to ensure the smooth running of the museum.
