Job Purpose
The Nursing Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, governance, quality, and performance of nursing services across the Clinic.
The Nursing Manager ensures the integration and harmonization of curative and palliative care teams, promotes a culture of patient-centered care, and provides strategic direction for the development of nursing services.
The Nursing Manager aims to reduce nursing staff turnover and strengthen retention through improved leadership, engagement, communication and professional development initiatives.
The Nursing Manager is accountable for clinical standards, workforce development, quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Governance
- Provide professional leadership to nursing teams.
- Ensure consistency of nursing practices across all units.
- Develop, review and implement nursing policies, procedures and protocols.
- Promote evidence-based practice and continuous improvement.
Clinical Operations Oversight & Service Coordination
- Oversee the operational functioning of all nursing-related clinical services, including Operating Theatre, Casualty, inpatient units and ambulatory care.
- Ensure that all clinical activities are planned and delivered in alignment with the overall service requirements, patient needs and organizational priorities.
- Supervise the coordination of nursing resources across all units to ensure equitable, efficient and patient-centered allocation of staff.
- Ensure that operational decisions, including activity planning and staff allocation, are made in the best interest of the clinic’s service continuity, quality of care and patient safety.
Quality & Patient Safety
- Lead clinical audits and quality reviews.
- Monitor patient safety indicators.
- Oversee incident reporting and corrective action plans.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
Workforce Management
- Define nursing staffing requirements.
- Lead recruitment and onboarding.
- Establish performance expectations and evaluation criteria.
- Conduct annual appraisals of nursing personnel.
- Manage disciplinary and performance matters.
- Promote staff engagement, retention and wellbeing by fostering a positive, respectful and supportive working environment.
- Monitor turnover, absenteeism and staff satisfaction trends, and implement corrective or improvement actions where necessary.
- Support career development, recognition and professional growth opportunities within the nursing team.
Staff Scheduling & Workforce Allocation Governance
- Define principles and governance for nursing roster planning in alignment with service demand and operational needs.
- Review and approve nursing rosters to ensure fairness, operational efficiency and continuity of care across all departments.
- Ensure that staffing allocation is not driven by individual preference but by clinical priorities, patient safety and service requirements.
- Address and resolve any imbalance or inappropriate allocation of staffing resources across units, including Operating Theatre and Casualty.
Team Integration & Culture
- Foster collaboration between curative and palliative care teams.
- Resolve interdepartmental tensions and barriers to collaboration.
- Promote shared objectives and nursing standards across services.
Training & Development
- Identify competency gaps.
- Develop annual training plans.
- Support leadership development within the nursing department.
Strategic & Management Responsibilities
- Participate in Management Meetings.
- Develop departmental objectives and KPIs.
- Contribute to organizational projects and service development.
- Prepare and present nursing performance reports.
Service Development & Strategic Projects (HDU / ICU / Expansion)
- Lead nursing input into the development of new clinical services, including High Dependency Unit (HDU) and future Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- Define nursing staffing models, skill mix requirements and training needs for new service development projects.
- Contribute to the planning, implementation and operational readiness of new clinical units.
- Ensure timely identification, preparation and development of nursing workforce capacity required for future clinical expansion.
- Act as a key stakeholder in all clinical transformation and expansion projects requiring nursing input.
- Skills and Qualifications

Education & Professional Registration
- Degree or Diploma in Nursing; a postgraduate qualification in Nursing Management, Health Services Management or a related field is an advantage.
- Current registration with the Nursing Council of Mauritius (or equivalent regulatory body) in good standing.
- Additional certification in clinical governance, quality management or leadership is desirable.
Experience
- At least 3-5 years in a nursing leadership, supervisory or management role, overseeing multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical operations across units such as Operating Theatre, Casualty/Emergency and inpatient care.
- Experience leading or contributing to the setup of new clinical services (e.g. HDU/ICU) is an advantage.
- Experience managing rosters, staffing allocation and workforce planning in a healthcare setting.
Leadership & Management Skills
- Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop multidisciplinary nursing teams.
- Strong workforce planning, recruitment and performance management capabilities.
- Sound judgement in resolving staffing conflicts and interdepartmental tensions fairly and transparently.
- Ability to define and implement policies, protocols and governance frameworks.
- Change management skills, particularly in the context of service expansion and new unit development.
- Budget and resource management awareness relevant to nursing operations.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust across clinical and non-clinical departments.
