We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate animal lover to join our team! As an animal carer, you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of endemic species, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge in the field of Conservation.

 

Job Brief

  • Exciting opportunity to work in Black River’s Gerald Durrell Endemic Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Collaborating with a dynamic Field team from various backgrounds.
  • Practical and theoretical training in species handling, breeding, and monitoring.
  • Interesting package based on qualification, experience, and personality.

Main responsibilities

  • Feeding and maintaining animals held in captivity: Ensuring that animals are fed appropriate diets and providing general care and maintenance.
  • Handling, measuring, tagging of animals.
  • Evaluating and monitoring animals: Regularly observing and recording animal behaviour, health, and well-being and providing necessary care in case of injury or diseases.
  • Caring for sick or injured animals: Administering treatments, medications, or provide supportive care.
  • Habitat enhancement to improve the living conditions and welfare of animals.
  • Assisting in captive breeding programs, which may involve monitoring breeding behaviour, maintaining breeding records, and ensuring appropriate conditions for successful reproduction.
  • Hand-rearing and nurturing young animals that require special care, socialising, and monitoring.
  • Collecting and accurately recording data related to above mentioned activities.
  • Providing support and assistance at other field sites operated by the organization, which may involve similar tasks related to animal care and conservation.

Requirements

  • Mauritian of at least 24 years old.
  • SC as Minimum qualification with experience: HSC is preferred.
  • Resides in Black River, Tamarin or surrounds will be a significant advantage.
  • Passionate about animals. Prior experience will be a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams and independently.
  • Physically active and can work outdoors in all conditions.
  • Ready to work on roster system for weekends.
  • Having a driving licence will be an advantage.
  • Good interpersonal, professional and communication skills.
  • Strong observation and practical skills
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Not colour blind.
