Job Description

Job Brief

As part of our regional expansion, Baker Tilly Technologies is looking for a full-time IoT Operations Technician to work with IoT deployments across customer sites — surveying sites, installing and commissioning devices, gateways and edge equipment, verifying connectivity, and producing the field documentation the rest of the platform depends on.

Duties and responsibilities

·        Conduct site surveys ahead of deployment — assess device/asset locations, mounting and power, cabling runs, panel/enclosure access, and connectivity feasibility, and produce survey reports.

·        Perform network coverage tests — measure and document LoRaWAN RF coverage (gateway placement, RSSI/SNR); identify dead zones and recommend gateway/antenna placement.

·        Install and commission devices, LoRaWAN gateways, protocol converters, and edge compute units; bring devices online and verify end-to-end data flow to the platform.

·        Integrate Modbus peripherals (RS485 / Modbus RTU) — confirm register maps, slave IDs, baud/parity, and validate readings against the device.

·        Write clear, structured commissioning reports documenting as-built wiring, device inventory and addressing, coverage results, test evidence, and sign-off.

·        Troubleshoot and maintain deployed equipment on site and remotely — diagnose connectivity, power, wiring, and device faults; perform sensor swaps, recalibration, and config changes.

·        Flag recurring field issues, document site-specific quirks, and feed improvements back to the engineering team.

Requirements and skills

·        Diploma or certification in electrical, electronics, automation, networking/telecommunications, or a related technical field.

·        2+ years of hands-on field experience in a technical install/commissioning role. This does not have to be in IoT — backgrounds in building automation / BMS, MEP, industrial automation, or controls are a strong fit.

·        Fieldbus / industrial protocol familiarity — at least one of Modbus RTU, OPC-UA, or BACnet. You understand serial/fieldbus device integration: addressing, register/point maps, polling, and validating readings. Modbus RTU is preferred.

·        Networking fundamentals — IP addressing/subnetting, switches, DHCP/static config, and the use of ping/traceroute for fault-finding, and an understanding of firewall rules.

·        Ability to read and understand datasheets and technical manuals.

·        Documentation discipline — able to write clear, structured survey and commissioning reports.

·        Valid driving license.
