Mechanic Operator

Job summary

The Mechanic Operator is responsible for operating tractors and heavy agricultural equipment/machinery to support field and soil preparation, planting and harvesting activities.

Duties & responsibilities

1. Tractor Operation & Equipment Handling

• Safely operate tractors and agricultural machinery for ploughing, harrowing, tilling and other assigned field operations.
• Operate specialized agricultural machinery such as planters, harvesters, seeders and sprayers, where trained and authorised.
• Maintain proper calibration, precision and efficiency during machinery operation to optimise field operations and minimise downtime.
• Assemble and/or disassemble tractor and machinery attachments as required.
• Carry out basic pre-start inspections and operational checks, and report any abnormality or fault identified.
• Operate and park assigned equipment safely and efficiently in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

2. Field Preparation & Planting

• Prepare fields for planting by safely and effectively operating tractors and agricultural machinery for ploughing, harrowing and tilling operations.
• Collaborate with the team during field preparation, planting and harvesting activities.
• Monitor field conditions and adjust machinery operations as required to ensure efficient and effective execution of the work.

3. Harvesting Support

• Operate tractors and other agricultural machinery safely and efficiently during harvesting operations.
• Transport harvested produce safely and efficiently to designated storage or processing areas.

4. Machinery Maintenance

• Conduct routine inspections and basic preventive maintenance of tractors and agricultural machinery to ensure proper functioning and availability.
• Carry out daily checks of fuel, oil levels, water separator, cooling system and other essential components.
• Perform daily walk-around inspections, clean equipment and report any abnormality, fault or failure to the responsible supervisor.
• Carry out first-line diagnosis and troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and operational faults within the level of competence.
• Perform basic corrective interventions and minor repairs where possible, and escalate major or complex faults to the Mechanic/Technical Team.
• Ensure effective diesel consumption and proper operation of the assigned tractor or machinery.
• Assist Mechanics during major repairs, servicing and maintenance activities when required.
• Return equipment to the designated location after use and ensure it is left in a safe and operational condition.

5. Safety and Compliance

• Adhere to all safety protocols, especially when operating heavy machinery or working in potentially hazardous conditions.
• Participate in safety training sessions and consistently apply safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Ensure compliance with environmental and agricultural regulations to minimize any negative impact on the farm or surrounding area.
• Report any Health and Safety issues promptly to ensure timely resolution and maintain a safe working environment.

6. Team collaboration

• Work closely with field supervisors, field workers, and other personnel to coordinate operations.
• Foster a positive work environment by communicating effectively with supervisor, line manager and colleagues.

7. Others

Any other cognate duties as may be necessary in the circumstances and/or required by the employer.

CANDIDATE’S PROFILE

Qualifications Required:

• At least 2 years of experience in operating tractors or similar heavy agricultural machinery in farming environments.
• PSAC or any related certification in heavy motors vehicles.

Key competences (Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, Behaviours):

• Strong mechanical knowledge of tractors and farming machinery.
• Good understanding of farming operations, including planting, irrigation, and harvesting.
• Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
• Good physical stamina and ability to work in outdoor conditions.
• Valid driver’s license; tractor operation certification by local regulations.
