Grade 1 Automotive Mechanic

About the Role

As part of the continued development of our automotive operations, Universal Motors Ltd is looking for an experienced and skilled Grade 1 Automotive Mechanic to join its aftersales team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out vehicle maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to high technical and quality standards, while contributing to the efficient operation of our automotive workshop.

We are looking for a dependable automotive professional with at least five years of hands-on experience, strong practical technical knowledge, good diagnostic abilities and a commitment to quality workmanship.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs

• Carry out routine servicing, preventive maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair faults affecting engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension, steering and other vehicle systems.
• Perform component replacement, adjustments and repairs according to proper technical procedures.
• Ensure assigned jobs are completed efficiently and within agreed timelines.

Vehicle Diagnostics

• Identify and diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults.
• Use diagnostic equipment and workshop tools effectively to identify vehicle problems.
• Interpret diagnostic trouble codes and carry out appropriate troubleshooting procedures.
• Assist with complex technical cases where required.
• Provide practical recommendations for repairs and corrective action.

Quality Control & Workmanship

• Ensure all maintenance and repair work is carried out to high standards of workmanship.
• Follow manufacturer specifications, technical procedures and workshop quality standards.
• Carry out appropriate checks and testing following repairs.
• Maintain a right-first-time approach and minimise repeat repairs.

Workshop Operations & Safety

• Maintain tools, equipment and assigned work areas in good condition.
• Follow workshop safety procedures and proper handling practices.
• Report additional faults, technical concerns and required parts to the workshop supervisor or manager.
• Work effectively with other technicians, service advisors and workshop personnel.
• Contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of the workshop.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum five years of hands-on experience in automotive maintenance, diagnostics and repair.
• Proven experience as a Grade 1 Mechanic, Senior Mechanic, Automotive Technician or in an equivalent skilled automotive role.
• Strong practical knowledge of vehicle mechanical systems, including engines, transmissions, braking, suspension and steering.
• Good understanding of modern automotive electrical and electronic systems.
• Ability to diagnose faults and carry out maintenance and repairs independently.
• Experience using automotive diagnostic equipment and workshop tools.
• Good understanding of technical procedures, workmanship standards and workshop safety practices.
• Responsible, disciplined and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• High level of integrity, reliability and professionalism.
• Knowledge or experience with electric and hybrid vehicles would be an advantage.
• Relevant automotive or mechanical qualifications would be an advantage.
• Willingness to undergo further technical and manufacturer-specific training.
