Job Description

Job Purpose

The Manager – Mother & Child is responsible for leading and managing the Maternity and Paediatric services to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, compassionate and patient- and family-centred care. The role provides clinical leadership and operational oversight, ensures effective management of nursing and midwifery teams, and promotes compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, patient safety requirements and applicable regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall clinical leadership and day-to-day operational management of the Maternity and Paediatric services.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care to mothers, newborns, infants, children and adolescents.
  • Supervise, guide and support nursing and midwifery teams, including supervisors, shift leaders and other clinical staff.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels, skill mix and staff deployment according to patient acuity, workload and service requirements.
  • Monitor patient flow, admissions, transfers and discharges to ensure efficient coordination and continuity of care.
  • Work closely with obstetricians, paediatricians, neonatologists and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, infection prevention and control standards, medication safety requirements and professional guidelines.
  • Monitor clinical quality indicators, patient safety concerns, incidents, near misses and complaints, and ensure appropriate investigation, corrective actions and follow-up.
  • Identify and escalate clinical and operational risks affecting patient safety or service delivery.
  • Conduct regular audits and departmental reviews and ensure identified improvement actions are implemented and monitored.
  • Promote a culture of compassionate care, privacy, dignity and respect for mothers, children and their families.
  • Monitor patient and family feedback and implement appropriate measures to continuously improve the patient experience.
  • Manage staff performance, attendance, conduct and development in collaboration with the Head of Nursing and Human Resources.
  • Identify training and competency requirements and ensure staff complete appropriate orientation, mandatory training and continuous professional development.
  • Coach and develop team members and contribute to succession planning within the Mother & Child services.
  • Address staff concerns, interpersonal conflicts and performance issues professionally and escalate matters where appropriate.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration between Maternity, Paediatrics and other clinical and support departments.
  • Manage departmental resources, equipment, consumables and other clinical supplies to ensure appropriate availability and utilisation.
  • Participate in manpower planning, budgeting and cost-control initiatives while maintaining required standards of patient care.
  • Ensure medical and clinical equipment is appropriately maintained and promptly escalate equipment failures or service requirements.
  • Maintain accurate departmental statistics, quality indicators, reports and other required documentation.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, accreditation activities, hospital committees and organisational projects as required.
  • Ensure patient information is handled confidentially and that professional and ethical standards are maintained at all times.
  • Perform other reasonable duties related to the management of Mother & Child services as assigned by the Head of Nursing.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing or equivalent recognised nursing qualification.
  • Registered Nurse and/or Registered Midwife with valid registration with the relevant professional regulatory body.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant clinical experience, preferably within Maternity, Neonatal and/or Paediatric services.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory, leadership or nursing management role.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, people management and healthcare operations.
  • Good knowledge of patient safety, infection prevention and control, clinical governance and healthcare quality standards.
  • A relevant qualification or training in healthcare management, leadership or administration would be an advantage.
