Job Description

The role of the Manager - Legal will be to assist the Head of Legal to ensure that the bank is adhering to its constitution and statutory obligations as well as all applicable banking and financial services laws as well as ensuring all legal matters are managed properly, efficiently and that the relevant and respective stakeholders are shared and given proper advice and guidance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for rolling out legal risk policies and procedures, ensuring that senior management fully understand the scope and requirements of legal related policies.
  • Liaising with external legal advisors on specific issues/ projects requiring further legal opinion
  • Liaising with external legal advisors in respect of court proceedings
  • Appearing in court for the Bank as required from time to time
  • To prepare litigation cases together with other members of the Legal Unit and ensure proper follow up.
  • Organizing, providing documents and assisting with disciplinary committees as and when required.
  • Designing, developing and implementing appropriate policies, procedures and processes to support operational (for e.g., complaints management) and legal matters.
  • Drafting and vetting of contracts, agreements, and other legal documents required in the conduct of business.
  • To keep up to date with amendments in legislations and advise on their implications for the Bank.
  • To advise Recovery dept on the best course for recovery of funds.
  • To advise all Departments on legal matters.
  • Ensure the proper and smooth delivery of legal advisory services to other departments
  • Advise the business drivers and senior executives on legal matters requiring input.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Holder of a Bachelor's Degree/Master's in Law (LLB/LLM) with at least 5 years in-house banking/financial services and management experience.
  • Qualified Barrister at Law/Attorney will be an advantage.
  • A working knowledge of the Code Civil Mauricien, Companies Act 2001, Financial Services Act 2007 and other related regulations in Mauritius.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both English and French
  • Proactive, well-organized, detailed conscious and team player
  • A working knowledge of the laws in Mauritius.
  • A systematic work method, attention to detail, self-motivated and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff and management.
  • Good computer skills, and in particular a good knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook email.
