Job Description
The Health & Safety Officer coordinates, supports and advises MUA on all aspects of Health & Safety. The role is responsible for establishing, implementing and monitoring Health & Safety standards, procedures, training and initiatives across MUA offices, branches and subsidiaries, in accordance with applicable Mauritian legislation and regulatory requirements.
Main Responsibilities
- Advise management and employees on Health & Safety requirements and promote a safe and healthy working environment.
- Monitor compliance with applicable Health & Safety legislation, policies and procedures, and conduct regular workplace inspections and risk assessments.
- Identify hazards, assess risks and recommend appropriate preventive and corrective measures, including in relation to equipment, facilities and work activities.
- Investigate and follow up on occupational accidents, dangerous occurrences and other Health & Safety incidents, identify root causes and recommend preventive measures.
- Ensure appropriate emergency, fire safety, first-aid and evacuation arrangements are maintained, including regular drills and adequate training of Fire Wardens.
- Prepare and implement an annual Health & Safety work plan and monitor progress against agreed actions.
- Prepare periodic Health & Safety reports, including the status of key risks, incidents and corrective actions, for management and the Health & Safety Committee.
- Advise and support managers and departments in implementing Health & Safety procedures and maintaining appropriate standards.
- Develop and deliver Health & Safety training, awareness programmes and communications for employees.
- Assess Health & Safety requirements and risks associated with company events, projects and other activities and recommend appropriate measures.
- Coordinate Health & Safety matters across MUA branches and subsidiaries and promote consistent standards and practices.
- Participate in relevant employee welfare and wellness initiatives.
Job Requirements
- Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Minimum 3 years' relevant experience in Health & Safety.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Safety and Health Officer in Mauritius, in accordance with applicable legislation.
- Good knowledge of Mauritian Occupational Safety and Health legislation and related regulations.
- Practical experience in risk assessment, workplace inspections, incident investigation and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and influence stakeholders at different levels.
- Good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work under pressure.
