Job Description
Alteo Agri Ltd is looking for a motivated and field-oriented Assistant
Agronomist to join its Agronomy team. Reporting
to the Agronomist, the role supports the implementation, monitoring and
evaluation of agronomic programmes for sugarcane and related crops through
fieldwork, sampling, trials, data analysis and operational follow-up. The
position is developmental, with progressive exposure to agronomic
interpretation and technical recommendations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the implementation and field follow-up of approved agronomic recommendations on cane varieties, soil amendments, fertiliser, herbicide, mechanical planting and harvesting.
- Carry out plantation and post-planting monitoring, including billet assessment, HWT follow-up, plantation surveys, germination, gap and density analysis.
- Perform soil and foliar sampling, support PSU lists and cane-growth measurements, coordinate sample submission to MSIRI and compile laboratory results for review.
- Establish and monitor agronomic trials and observation plots, collect and validate data, and support nitrogen, variety, seed-cane and HWT programmes.
- Support green-manure, crop-rotation, compost and co-product programmes and maintain the field records needed to assess their impact on soil and cane performance.
- Maintain agronomic records and CanePro information, analyse data in Excel, draft technical updates and support fertiliser/herbicide budget inputs, planning and projects.
- Coordinate field and sampling activities with operations, Field Services, MSIRI and other contributors while supporting Bonsucro, environmental and health & safety requirements.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- BSc in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, Soils, Plant Pathology or a comparable agricultural-science discipline, or equivalent qualification.
- One to three years' relevant experience in agronomy or crop production is desirable; strong graduates with relevant practical training may also be considered.
- Practical exposure to sugarcane production, field monitoring, soil/plant sampling or agronomic trials is an advantage.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking and a practical, field-oriented approach.
- Good planning, ownership, learning agility and proactive follow-through.
- Good working knowledge of MS Excel and standard Microsoft Office applications; agricultural data/statistical tools are an advantage.
- Fluent in English and French.
- Valid driving license and willingness to undertake regular fieldwork.
