Job Description
Alteo Agri Ltd is looking for an experienced and proactive Agronomist to
strengthen its Agronomy team. Reporting
to the Senior Agronomist and Agricultural Manager, the role will lead
agronomic programmes and translate field, laboratory and trial evidence into
practical recommendations that improve productivity, crop quality, soil health,
cost effectiveness and sustainability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop evidence-based recommendations on cane varieties, soil amendments, fertiliser, herbicide, mechanical planting and harvesting, and follow through on field implementation.
- Plan and oversee plantation and post-planting monitoring, including billet assessment, HWT, plantation surveys, germination, gap and density analysis, and corrective recommendations.
- Lead soil-sampling, foliar-diagnosis and nutrient-management programmes; interpret MSIRI and other technical results and translate them into practical field and budget requirements.
- Design, establish and evaluate agronomic trials and observation plots, including nitrogen and variety trials, seed-cane/HWT programmes and varietal performance through plant cane and ratoon cycles.
- Lead work on green-manure systems, crop rotation and the sustainable valorisation of mill and poultry co-products, including compost quality, application and longer-term soil and crop impact.
- Prepare and monitor fertiliser and herbicide budgets, technical reports, annual agronomic programmes, feasibility studies and selected projects.
- Coordinate with field operations, Field Services, Finance, MSIRI and other technical partners, while supervising and developing the Assistant Agronomist.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- BSc in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, Soils, Plant Pathology or a comparable agricultural-science discipline, or equivalent qualification.
- At least 3 years’ relevant experience in sugarcane agronomy or a closely related crop-production environment.
- Sound practical knowledge of sugarcane production, soil fertility, plant nutrition, crop establishment, varietal evaluation and field experimentation.
- Strong analytical and agronomic judgement with a practical, field-oriented approach.
- Leadership, coaching, planning and follow-through capability.
- Good working knowledge of MS Excel and standard Microsoft Office applications; agricultural data/statistical tools are an advantage.
- Fluent in English and French.
- Valid driving licence and willingness to work extensively in field environments.
