Powerpay is a market-leading cloud payroll solution that helps thousands of Small business Canadian businesses manage payroll efficiently, accurately, and compliantly. We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team responsible for building and enhancing modern payroll experiences using Java, Spring Boot, React, and AI-enabled technologies.

In this role, you will combine strong people leadership with technical and delivery excellence, ensuring your team delivers scalable, secure, and customer-focused solutions. You will partner closely with Product Management, Architecture, and other engineering teams to drive innovation while maintaining the reliability and quality our customers expect.

What You'll Get to Do

Team Leadership & Development

- Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers through regular feedback, mentoring, and career development planning.
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing engineering culture.
- Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Encourage continuous learning and adoption of modern engineering practices and emerging technologies.

Delivery Excellence

- Own team execution and delivery of product roadmap commitments.
- Partner with Product Managers to prioritize work and align delivery with customer and business needs.
- Facilitate Agile development practices including sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Monitor team performance, remove delivery impediments, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Leadership

- Provide technical guidance on architecture, design, development, testing, and deployment activities.
- Lead development of scalable applications and services using Java, Spring Boot, React, REST APIs, and cloud technologies.
- Drive engineering best practices including code quality, automation, security, performance, and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with Architecture and Platform teams to ensure solutions align with enterprise standards and long-term product strategy.

Innovation & AI

- Explore and drive adoption of AI and Generative AI capabilities that enhance customer experience, product functionality, and engineering productivity.
- Encourage experimentation and continuous improvement within the team.
- Stay current on industry trends, payroll technology advancements, and emerging software development practices.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Build strong partnerships across Product, UX, Architecture, Operations, Compliance, and Customer Support teams.
- Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and delivery plans effectively to stakeholders and leadership.
- Contribute to tactical planning and help translate organizational objectives into actionable team goals.

Skills & Experience We Value

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience leading Agile software development teams in a people management capacity.
- Proven experience delivering enterprise SaaS applications.
- Strong coaching, communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated success building high-performing engineering teams and delivering business outcomes.

Technical Expertise

- Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot.
- Experience developing modern web applications using React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Experience with microservices, REST APIs, cloud-native architectures, and CI/CD practices.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS
- Experience with automated testing, monitoring, and DevOps practices.
