Job Description
Job Purpose
The Compost & Agronomy Operator is responsible for supporting the efficient operation of the compost park and assisting with agronomic activities to ensure the production of quality compost and the effective implementation of soil fertility programmes. The incumbent manages composting operations, monitors key process parameters, maintains accurate operational records, and ensures compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards. The role also supports field and laboratory activities, including soil and plant sampling, compost application, agronomic trials, and data collection, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices, improved soil health, and enhanced crop productivity.
MAIN
RESPONSIBILITIES
Compost Park
Operations
· Receive,
verify weighbridge tickets, deliver “Delivery Notes”, record, and sort
sugarcane by-products.
·
Form and
maintain compost windrows/piles according to standard dimensions.
·
Operate the
windrow turner and monitor composting parameters (temperature, moisture,
aeration).
·
Collect
samples for laboratory analysis and record operational data (temperature logs,
turning frequency, water use).
·
Ensure
compliance with safety and environmental standards.
·
Maintain a
clean and safe composting site, free from contamination or pest infestations.
Agronomic
Tasks
·
Assist in
spreading compost on fields according to recommended application rates.
·
Support soil
sampling and analysis before and after compost application.
·
Soil
sampling for replanted fields 2025/2026, 2026/2027.
·
Prepare soil
samples to be submitted to MSIRI.
·
Assist in
agronomy laboratory work (pH, CMS; etc).
·
Foliar leaf
sample for diagnosis as per PSU’s.
·
Participate
in agronomic trials and assist with data collection.
SKILLS &
COMPETENCIES
·
Hands on
knowledge of composting principles and soil fertility.
·
At ease with
data recording of samples and analysis.
·
Basic IT
skills (excel will be an advantage).
·
Physically
fit and able to perform outdoor manual tasks.
·
Able to lead
and manage a team of field workers with good communication skills.
·
Safety and
environmental awareness.
·
Previous
experience in agricultural or composting operations would be an advantage.
