Job Description

Porter

The Porter plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of patients, medical equipment, specimens, and supplies across the hospital. This position is key in enhancing patient experience, supporting medical teams, and ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and safety.


Reporting to the Porter Lead, the selected candidate will have the responsibility to assist in the daily activity of the department.


A. Patient Transportation & Assistance 
• Safely transport patients to and from wards, diagnostic areas, operating theaters, and other departments.
• Ensure patient dignity, comfort, and safety while in transit.
• Assist patients with mobility needs, including the use of wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds.
• Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients during transfers.

B. Equipment & Supply Management 
• Transport medical equipment and supplies as per hospital requirements.
• Assist with the collection and delivery of medications from the pharmacy.
• Ensure timely and safe transport of medical specimens to the laboratory following infection control protocols.
• Maintain and clean wheelchairs, trolleys, and stretchers, ensuring they are in good working condition.

C. Environmental Hygiene & Infection Control 
• Ensure patient transfer areas, wheelchairs, and stretchers are sanitized after each use.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control measures during transport duties.
• Assist in the proper disposal of medical waste, including handling of biohazard materials following hospital policies.
• Report any spills, accidents, or hazards to the appropriate department.

D. Emergency Response & Safety 
• Assist in transporting critically ill patients swiftly and safely when required.
• Respond promptly to emergency calls for patient transport in collaboration with medical teams.
• Ensure corridors, lifts, and patient transfer areas are clear of obstructions.
• Participate in hospital-wide safety drills and emergency response procedures.

E. Communication & Collaboration 
• Work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff to coordinate efficient transport and movement of patients.
• Maintain clear and professional communication with colleagues regarding patient transfers.
• Escalate any delays, safety concerns, or technical issues to the Ward Supervisor or Facilities Manager.
• Provide courteous and helpful service to patients and visitors, assisting with directions and queries when needed
• To undertake any cognate duties which are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade functionally, HIS related issues/ tasks and as requested by the supervisor.


What are we looking for?

  • SC OR HSC, HCA Certificate Level 4 will be an advantage
  • 0-2 years working experience
  • Good communication skills, customer service knowledge
