Job Title                Sports and Fitness Assistant

Campus:                Mauritius

Reporting to:         Head of Counselling and Wellbeing Services

         

 

Overall Purpose

 

The Sports and Fitness Assistant is a full-time, multi-skilled role responsible for the safe and effective day-to-day operation of the campus gym and for supporting wider sports, physical activity and student wellbeing initiatives across the University. Working closely with the Sports Officer and the wider Counselling and Wellbeing Services team, the postholder will provide an inclusive, responsive and professionally managed service for students and staff.

The role combines gym supervision, fitness guidance, customer service, administration, equipment and resource management, class delivery, and support for sports activities and events. Duties will be prioritised flexibly in response to operational requirements and patterns of student demand.

 

 

Principle Duties

 

Gym Operations, Fitness Support, and Resource Management

 

·        Oversee daily gym operations, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and well-supervised environment.

·        Monitor gym access, verify membership status, and address or escalate unauthorised entry.

·        Respond promptly to enquiries from students and staff regarding gym access, services, and fees, while promoting and enforcing rules, safety procedures, and hygiene standards.

·        Provide basic fitness guidance on exercise techniques and safe training practices, within scope of competence, addressing routine non-compliance and escalating concerns where necessary.

·        Conduct gym inductions covering equipment use, posture, progression, and injury prevention

·        Deliver fitness classes and group sessions (e.g. yoga, stretching, circuit training) and carry out fitness assessments where qualified.

·        Inspect gym equipment and facilities regularly to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper functionality, and report any faults or maintenance needs.

·        Promote healthy and sustainable lifestyle habits through appropriate advice and positive engagement.

·        Assist with equipment inventory, stock control, and support the implementation and review of gym policies and safety procedures.

Sports Activities, Events, and Student Engagement

 

  • Support the planning and delivery of recreational, intramural, and competitive sports programmes, including training sessions, fixtures, competitions, and related logistics.
  • Assist in organising and delivering sports events, fitness initiatives, and student engagement activities such as sports days, tournaments, and induction sessions.
  • Promote participation in sports and fitness activities, including encouraging wider student involvement, and supporting the coordination of coaches and facilitators to ensure safe and effective delivery.

 

Administration, Monitoring, and Service Development

 

  • Maintain accurate records for membership, access, and participation, and support the administration of gym systems, timetabling, bookings, and routine communications.
  • Gather and manage data to support reporting, resource planning, and operational decision-making.
  • Support service improvement initiatives, including feedback collection and surveys, and liaise with internal teams, coaches, and service providers to ensure effective delivery.

 

Health and Safety Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including risk assessments, emergency procedures, and University policies, while acting as a designated first aider when required.
  • Record and report incidents, accidents, and near misses promptly, ensuring appropriate escalation and adherence to University procedures.

 

Other Duties:

 

·        Undertake any additional tasks as required by the Head of Wellbeing Counselling Service, particularly during major events such as examinations, invigilation, and graduation ceremonies, where all campus staff are expected to contribute.

·        This job description may be reviewed and updated in consultation with the post-holder as duties and responsibilities evolve.

·        Carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the role, as requested by the line manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

Job Title:  Sports and Fitness Assistant

 

Selection Criteria

 

Essential – Education, Qualifications and Experience

 

·        Relevant qualification in fitness/sport (or practical experience) and willingness to obtain first-aid certification

·        Experience working in a gym, fitness, or sports environment with strong customer service skills

·        Basic administrative and organisational experience, including record-keeping and supporting daily operations

 

Desirable – Education, Qualifications and Experience

 

·        A degree or diploma in sport, fitness, or a related field, or relevant practical experience

·        Experience or training in sports coaching and delivering group fitness sessions (e.g. yoga, circuits, stretching)

·        Experience organising sports activities, events, or student programmes, preferably in an educational setting

·        Experience supporting equipment checks, stock control, or access systems

 

Essential Skills and Knowledge

 

·        Good understanding of basic exercise techniques and safe training practices

·        Knowledge of health and safety in a gym or sports setting

·        Strong communication and customer service skills, with a friendly and approachable manner

·        Ability to explain exercises clearly to individuals and groups

·        Basic organisational and admin skills, with attention to detail
