The groom works in direct contact with the horses or in the stable. He spends a good part of his time in their daily care and in maintaining the boxes, their equipment, the horse work areas and their installations.

 

Responsibilities

  • Adhering to feeding, cleaning and supplement schedules.
  • Feeding and watering horses.
  • Keeping horses clean and grooming them – brushing their coats and oiling their hooves, shampoo.
  • Mucking out (cleaning) stables, the buckets and putting down new bedding.
  • Cleaning saddles, bridles, and other riding gear (‘tack’).
  • Checking horses for injuries or illness and following care instruction from the Stable Supervisor.
  • Administering prescribed medications and general first aid.
  • Checking the state of health of the animal (injury, nervousness, refusal to eat etc…).
  • Carrying out various maintenance work such as that of the equipment (greasing the saddles, washing the carpets etc…), installations (stables, paddock, hiking trails).
  • Getting horses ready for riding lessons and balade.
  • Taking the horses out of the paddocks or taking them there.
  • Preparing the stables or arena for the arrival of the clients.
  • May be required to lead a horse, in hand, during a walk with customers.
  • Warning when the amount of food or litter becomes nearly insufficient.
  • His day is dictated by the horse. He may have to start early in the morning or end late in the evening depending on the care to be given to the horses entrusted to him. As he spends all his time with the horses, his opinion is considered. He can share all his observations concerning the state of health and the evolution of the horse.
  • General cleaning of the stables (corridors/rooms/store).
  • Stay to help in case of horse injury.
  • Stay to assist the farrier.
  • May be required to do simple works (painting, small repairs).
  • Respect the daily planning.
  • Abide by rules and regulations of Mont Choisy.
  • Wear proper safety equipment (uniform and safety shoes).
  • Keep in mind the the health and safety of horses/clients and the groom himself.

Any other assignments as may be delegated.
